2022 has become the first year since Covid when life for restaurants has seemingly improved. And in many ways, we helped. While the economy was licking its wounds, catering costs were rising, and staff were in no hurry to return to the kitchens, one could doubt that establishments would cope. But the support of visitors had a positive effect.
But that's not the only trend the foodtech community is facing. BentoBox (a CMS platform that allows establishments to serve customers online) collected data from 14,000+ restaurant partners around the world. Here are the trends that stood out.

While restaurant customers returned in droves, for much of the year, establishments struggled to meet demand amid rising costs for both food and labor. Inflation was eating into already slim profit margins. And despite what anyone could tell, restaurant menu prices had risen less than their cost of production.
The second trend is labor shortages. Despite the fact that wages for workers have increased by 21% since 2020, 65% of restaurants still do not have enough staff to meet customer demand.

It’s hard to believe, but in 2022, if you don’t have a website, social media, and a map, you’re unlikely to be found. 75% of diners use search engines to find a place to dine. Google Maps has helped find more restaurants than any other review platform in the industry.

Older people googled specific search queries, such as the name of a restaurant or type of cuisine. Young people prefer to search for establishments by reviews, descriptions, or prices, without asking specific questions.
